Q. Where did the Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety apple originate? A. It was developed a number
of years ago at the Department of Agriculture for Western
Australia.
Q. How was the Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety apple developed? A. It is a cross between a Golden Delicious apple and a Lady Williams apple.
Q. Did this process
have anything to do with genetic modification? A. No. This was the crossing
of two existing varieties that resulted in this hybrid. This
kind of work that has gone on for decades and is responsible
for a great many ‘improved’ produce items with
superior characteristics such as improved flavor, size, and
color.
Q. Is the Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety the only commercially viable apple to come out of the
cross between Golden Delicious and Lady William? A. No. There have been
others, with the most notable to date being an apple called
Sundowner®. This sister to Pink Lady® Brand Cripps
Pink Variety is red rather than pink but also has outstanding
flavor.
Q. When can I find
Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety at my supermarket? A. Pink Lady® Brand
Cripps Pink Variety from domestic sources
are generally available
from mid October to April or May.
As the production in the Southern Hemisphere increases, the
exports of the Pink Lady® brand during our ‘off-season’ should
make it more widely available.
Q. If I can’t
find Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety at my favorite
supermarket what should I do? A. Ask the produce manager to contact headquarters
to bring some in. Don’t buy any stories about this
fruit not being available because it usually is available
from some source, somewhere. !
Q.Why
isn’t Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety pink all over? A. As with other apples
that have a blush, the sun is the major contributor. In the
case of the Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety the blush is usually pink.
Q. What if the blush
on the Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety at my favorite supermarket is
red is rather than pink? Will it have an impact on the quality
of the apple. A. A red blush could be the result of a number
of factors including that the apple may have been left on
the tree a little longer. A red blush does nothing to reduce
the quality of the Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety apple.
Q. What’s the
deal with all of the register marks,
showing up all over the Pink Lady® America web page? A. The register
marks indicate that the products and organizations listed
are protected under federal copyright laws. These same register
marks are also illustrative of the fact that the use of the
trademark, as related to the Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety name and
its logo, is also a vital part of the Pink Lady® marketing
program.

Will the Pink Lady® Brand Cripps Pink Variety be
followed in the marketplace by other equally good apples? A. While it’s
hard to say if they’ll be ‘equally as good,’ you
can expect a wide range of new apples coming to market in
the next five to ten years. Again these will be hybrids and
there will be improvements in a number
of characteristics including some that will possess increased
high health elements.
